Plastische Demokratie, Düsseldorf / Berlin

This project took place in public spaces
in Düsseldorf.
The Düsseldorf Academy of the Arts, the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, raumlaborberlin, and the "Beuys 2021" project team are behind the collaboratively developed project. Together, we invited architects, artists, scientists, students, and visitors to explore and discuss, contextualize, and update Beuys's ideas. The core of the project was an experimental architecture developed by raumlaborberlin on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz: in front of the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, in the city center. Here, in this structure that serves as stage, image, and building, democratic models were discussed. Utopias, ideas, and projects for a more democratic society were discussed and negotiated. And we lived together. Whether cooking, eating, working or going out, talking, playing or living: sharing and participating were an integral part of the shared thinking process
. “

Plastische Demokratie, Düsseldorf / Berlin

For three weeks, I and a team of people worked on the scenography and construction of interactive wooden designs transported from Berlin to Düsseldorf.

Once there, we helped organize and set up the venue, as well as future micro-events taking place there. With the help of various international collectives, we were able to organize workshops of various kinds, ranging from ceramics, charcoal drawing techniques, the creation of housing protest signs, and even reading and cooking workshops. This ecosystem of participants, activating the spaces of Plastic Democracy, is at the heart of the social sculpture process, creating micro-actions together and reflecting on possible futures in architecture and urban planning, intertwined with social, decolonial, and ecological issues.
